Sing, sing, sing – “Rain, Rain, Go Away”, “Raindrops Keep Falling On my Head”, Though April Showers May Come Your Way”, and “It’s Raining, It’s Pouring”.

Make a Rainy Day Can of activities – Write on separate cards some activities that would be fun and entertaining on a rainy day. Decorate the can with raindrops and umbrellas.

Study ocean creatures and make paper plate creatures.

Study the phases of the moon. For a month starting April 15 make a Moon Phase journal. To make the journal, 1)cut blank typing paper in half, 2)stack, 3)get one piece of construction paper and fold over stacked sheets, 4)staple together.

Every night for a month, go outside before bedtime and look at the moon. Record the date, time and what you see. Allow your child to draw the moon that he/she sees. At the end of the month, you should see all the phases of the moon. If it is cloudy and you cannot see the moon, record that in your journal.

Activities for February. I’m sorry I’m so late getting this done. I will be posting the March activities early, I promise.

Make a cherry pie.
Make stuffed fabric hearts.
Make a heart shaped cake.
Read I Cor. 13.
Find love passages and make small posters, laminate if possible
Study the lives of Presidents Washington and Lincoln.
Make sillouettes of them using the penny and dollar as models.

Feb. 17th is Random Acts of Kindness Day. Do at least one act of kindness today for a stranger. Suggestions: pay for someone’s meal at a fast food restaurant, take a shut-in a meal or a Get Well card., help an older individual put groceries in their car.

Feb. 20th – John Glenn Orbits Earth in 1962 (in the Friendship 7 space capsule. He was the first person to orbit the Earth). Read about this exciting historic space adventure.

Feb. 25 is Quiet Day – play the quiet game. Winner gets a prize.

Feb. 27th is International Polar Bear day – Make a Safety Pin polar bear. Here is a pattern, just change the brown with white.

Monthly Activities for 2014

Abby and I found a list with monthly activities for every month of the year. We have decided this will be a fun thing to do. One of the activities is a year-long “Season’s Tree”. Every month you add something to the tree. So I’ll be adding that as well.

I’ll post each month’s activities near the end of the previous month. I’ll also post pictures of our “Season’s Tree” as we go. I hope you enjoy.

January:
Make hot Cocoa and read a good book

Play Basketball

Make Super Bowl predictions and then Watch the Super Bowl

Learn to Ice skate

Cook and eat Black-eyed peas and cabbage

Weekly Wrap-Up – Dec. 6, 2013

Ok this week we have been busy, busy. We had a LeBonheur visit and the AFA packing party, so its been crazy.

English – She is in the middle of PACE 1066 and is doing pretty good. We are diagramming adjectives, adverbs, and direct objects.

Reading – She has finished “The Spy” and is now reading “The Bronze Bow”.

Writing – Abby did very good on her descriptive paragraph. For the next couple of weeks and into January, I will be allowing her to concentrate on her video project. So no separate writing.

Math – We are continuing to work on pre-algebra, fractions and decimals. This week we’ve been working on coordinate plane and some geometry. We are doing perimeter, area and area of a triangle.

History – I’m hoping we will be finished with Ancient Rome before Christmas.

Science – We haven’t done much science this week.

Project – I have assigned a video project for her to complete by the end of January. The assignment is to make a video about how people in our area view homeschooling. She is also going to do a section on “the truth of homeschooling” where she will interview some homeschooling families.

Our Homeschool Weekly Wrap-up

This week has been a slow week for us because of illness, but I wanted to get back in the habit of doing a wrap-up.  So here I go:

Grammar – We finished PACE 1066 and she has started 1067.  We are working on adjectives and adverbs again.  This time around it seems to be easier.

Reading – In reading Abby is reading “The Spy”.  It is a little harder book, so I’m allowing her to listen to an audio version, which she of course loves.  She does have to read a chapter review and answer comprehension questions.

Writing – This week Abby is working on a descriptive essay.  She had to pick something to describe and is now going through the essay paragraph by paragraph.

Spelling – Our spelling list this week is contractions, academic words, and two sight words.

Math – We have been working on pre-algebra, fractions and decimals.  Today we did stem and leaf plots and Box and Whisker.  This was a little tedious, but it is necessary.

History – This week we started studying Ancient Rome.  We are studying architecture, battles, religion and much more.

Science – We have finishing up our study of “flying things” in the next two weeks.  This week we have been studying for chapter 10 test.

Teaching Tips – Current Events

Abby’s history this year has her doing current events at different times.  She isn’t sure she like it, but I really do.  I think it helps her to think beyond our little “neck of the woods”.  She also reads a cartoon and writes what she thinks it is about.  I really think this causes her to think through different ideas that other people might have.  It’s a little out of her comfort zone, but she has come to enjoy it.

I believe these kinds of activities can help children to work through ideas and beliefs.  It also gives them the opportunity to see other’s thoughts and to see beyond their own lives.

These activities can be done weekly or just occasionally.  At this point Abby is doing them at the end of each unit.  The websites to find current events are:  http://www.studentnewsdaily.com/archive/world-current-events/ and http://teacher.scholastic.com/activities/scholasticnews/index.html . Our Homeschool so far.

We started school this year early, because of the trips we will be taking.  Our start date was July 15th, so we are on week 10 this week.  I’d like to review what we have accomplished thus far.

In Grammar, we have been working on verbs and their tenses.  Present, Past, Future and the participle tenses.  It has been slow, but she is getting it!

In Reading she has read some great poetry, an epic poem, and has just completed the book Penrod and Sam.  She has also just completed a book review for that book.

In writing she has written an essay on “Micro Bats”, and has submitted it online for peer review. This was a neat experience.  She submitted hers and reviewed another person’s essay.  It has really helped her to be more careful in her writing.

For Math was are using Saxon 87 and she has completed lesson 25.  We are also working on Multiplication and Division review.

In History she has been studying ancient cultures.  We have done Greece, China and the Mayans.  We are now starting to read about ancient India.  For the Mayan’s, she did a Power Point presentation and presented it to our family.  For each culture she has done a timeline including economic, social, art, music and religion.  She also takes all kinds of notes of what she has read.

We will use these timelines to then put them together to see how these cultures overlapped.  During the section on ancient China, she made a scroll with Chinese lettering of the Buddha’s five virtues.

In Science we have learned about birds, bats and flying reptiles.  We have completed a lapbook component, taken notes and done a crossword puzzle for each chapter.

Some of the activities we have done have been recording what birds come to our bird feeders, we have taken some great pictures of hummingbirds, we have gone outside and measured the wingspan of several types of Pterosaurs and we have made a fossil egg.  We are about to start a chapter on insects.

As part of our school, we attend a co-op every Friday.  Our day at co-op includes an assembly, choir practice and then three classes that change every month.  This month we have art, book club and PE.  This past Friday we had an unexpected visitor who brought along a Sugar Glider.  She was so cute!  All the children were able to pet her and watch her climb on everything.

Abby is also learning Hindi in anticipation of her visit to India.  She is working on Hindi greetings and other phrases she might need in India.  We found a good site for conversational Hindi, Hindipod101.

I’ll try and keep a journal here of our activities as well as pictures.

I get a list of words from www.k12reader.com.  I usually use the words for the weekly rule, but add my own academic and sight words.  I also add 4 additional words to make 20.  Then we follow this weekly schedule:

Monday – write the words in agenda and twice in notebook

Tuesday – Put words in alphabetical order and look up 10 of the words in the dictionary

Wednesday – Look up the other 10 words and write 3 sentences using as many words as possible.  Pretest

Thursday – Write the words missed on pretest 10 x each and study for test

Friday – Test

Some Additions to our Curriculum for the coming year.

Abby and I have decided to add a couple of things to her curriculum for this coming school year. The first is she will be taking Spanish. I found a website called 123TeachMe
There are enough lessons for the entire school year. I think it will work really well.

Another change will be her Reading and Writing. I’m still going to have her do a creative writing piece every week, but this website, All In One Homeschool, has some great curriculum. Abby will be doing the English 7 course, the Ancient History course and some of the computer course. She will do this independently as she needs to do some things on her own and this looks really good. There is some grammar in the English course, but until she finishes the English PACEs we have, she will continue using those. She will be doing just the Reading, Vocabulary and Writing portions. The author has all subjects available through 8th grade as well as some High School courses.

So that’s our changes. I’ll be updating our entire curriculum soon.

I’ve been working on our curriculum for next year and I decided to make our postcard exchange go further. I’ve made a worksheet for Abby to complete as we get postcards from each state. This is a one page sheet that covers things like state capital, largest cities, state symbols, population, bordering states, and famous people. There is also a map of the US that she will color in the appropriate state.

Abby’s Creative Writing Notebook

I’m not sure where I found this notebook, but I thought it was great! So we decided to make one. I really liked that it had sections, both teaching and her writing, all in the same place. We took a week just to set the notebook up and to do the “Writing Ideas” section. We also did one page in the “Writing Notes” section. So here are the sections of her notebook:

This is the Table of Contents. To make it easier, have your students/children number all the pages in their notebook. Even if they pull one out, they will be numbered and they can then add them to the Table of Contents.

This is the first page in the “Writing Ideas” section. This is Abby’s Authority List. These are things she feels she has some authority writing about. Abby’s were: One Direction, Ed Sheeran, Deaf/Mute, Family, love, Acteens, Adventures.

This was her Memory Hand. Here she was to write feeling words on each finger such as happy, sad, angry, excited, nervous, and proud. She then wrote a memory that cooresponded to the emotion. These can then be used to “jumpstart” an idea for writing.

Here is her first writing assignment in her new notebook in the “My Writing” section. She recently went on a mission trip to Jackson, MS with her Acteens group. She had to write 5 paragraphs about her adventure.

This page is in the “Writing Notes” section. I used this with my 5th graders when I taught school to help them make their sentences better. I thought Abby could use it as well. On each finger you write: who, what, where, where, and why and then how goes on the palm. We did a lesson together using a simple sentence like, “We went to the store.” We then used the words on the fingers to make the sentence better. Example: Who – change We to Mom and I. When – Add yesterday. Why – add to get milk. Where – change the store to Walmart. How – add in the car. So the simple sentence was changed to “Yesterday, Mom and I went to Walmart in the car to get milk.”
