Large US map. Ours is 4 pages by 4 pages.

I’d like to tell you about my U.S. Geography curriculum.  We are loving it.  After you get started, its actually pretty much a project your child can do on their own.  I would say from 3rd grade on up.  You take one state per week.  After the child is taught how to do the research, they can then do it on their own.  You first decide what state you will be visiting next, then you use “Googlemaps” to find the route from the state capital that has just been finished to the next state’s capital.  On a large wall map, the child marks the route down.  We found a great website, Your Child Learns, to print out the maps.  At this website you can print all kinds of maps from one page to 8 pages x 8 pages.  The child then fills out a “report” for each state, this is where the research comes in.  Some of the questions on the report are: captial, largest cities, population, rivers, state bird and state flower.  They will draw the state flag, figure out how much gas it will take to get there, and look up a famous person from the state and much more.  Your child will also make a flashcard for each state with the capital and abbreviation.  This is the only information along with the location of the state that I am personally having my child memorize.  On Friday, your child will color in the state on the big map  and put a star on the capital.  They will also put a state stamp in their “passport”.

If anyone is interested in the curriculum, please email me and let me know.

Here are some pictures of our “travels” so far.
